From days in the merchant marines and bands, vagabond(ing) in a van touring for rock bands, it interested me how small a space someone would accept, and also how much they would pay for that especially in Austin, Texas 2019 during the now gargantuan SXSW music festival.
The takeaway with these new, undefined living metrics coming from a real estate industry hot with decades waiting changes. When the fader on the real estate mixing board goes up on such things as location, lifestyle, amenities inside (and out) common areas, style, and transportation access, the fader on square footage can be pulled down (and lower than it ever has before).
Curiosity came from trips to Los Angeles and examining the traveling business commuter / STR / AirBNB rental market. Like Kramer in Seinfeld and Mr. Potter under the stairs, offering cozy housing with a smile and an experience seem to be the zeitgeist of the rental day in woke urban tech centers.
Non-committal tiny homes, microspaces, commuter rooms, and even barndominiums — all these new real industry portmanteaus currently vie for position as this new Real Estate jam is shaved off and sold any size, by the crystal, as a snow cone on 78704 corner.
This urban commuter room surprisingly can fit two large bags under the bed and floor shelving is more than adequate for most books and gear.
Two shelves above can used for heavier items. Jackets and shirts can be hung on the rack on the wall.
A seventies, Gilley’s ready Lone Star beer clock hums a nice clickety clack on the wall as the minute hand catches and scrapes on the hour hand. It makes the clock a little slow on Time. The four inch memory foam was a cloud of bad sleep reversed. The old ball and chain to the clock is brass, green, and corroded — a rhythmic elixir as this blast from the past turns intor the future.
As Texas gets bigger, Austin seems to get smaller. Currently the college town with the Metropolitan uniform is #1 in startups globally. Living and technology seem to be riding hand-in-hand — tight, efficient, temporary like a ‘new’ tablet or great breakfast taco with no traffic.
